Reeds
Clarinet Reeds
- Minimum of 3
- Sizes/Strength
- 5th grade: Size 2.5
- 6th grade: Size 3
- 7/8 grade: Size 3.5
- Recommended Brands:
- 5th Grade: Juno, Rico (Orange Box), Rico Royal (Blue box)
- Should be going though about a reed every 2-3 weeks (unless they are chipping/breaking them)
- 6th-8th Grade: Vandoren, Mitchel Lurie, Rico Grand Concert, Rico Reserve
- Should be going through about a reed per week (unless they are chipping/breaking them)
- please know that other brands while probably inexpensive, will produce a very poor tone
- 5th Grade: Juno, Rico (Orange Box), Rico Royal (Blue box)
- Reed Care/Management
- 5th (& maybe 6th) grade: Buy a 10-pack of reeds and give your student one or two at a time. That way you can monitor how fast they are going through the reeds and you can talk to them about taking better care of them. A box of 10 should last you most of the year in 5th grade if they are taken care of.
- 7th & 8th: Most definitely should be buying boxes. But students should be mature and responsible enough to manage their own reeds. You should go through a box per quarter or maybe per month. It depends on how often your student practices.
