Jazz Ensemble
Auditions for 2020-21 School Year
- Only 7th & 8th graders are eligible to audition
- The first week of school will be time for you to practice and send a flip grid video to me of you playing the material below. I will be available during RT&E to go over swing and the material.
- If you are interested JOIN THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM
- even if it's not on your schedule.
- Class codes are in Mr. Boenzi's MS Band Update emails
- You will have to play the following material for me
- 1st line of Blues Scales
- Click here for the music
- login with your SUSDLearns.us acct.
- Guitar use the C Treble/Vibes part
- 2 songs of your choice
- that you enjoy playing that you are proud of and want to share with me
- 30 seconds per song
- choose a good section. You don't have to start at the beginning
- Percussion/Drum Set
- You will play the first line of blues scales as listed above on a mallet instrument
- Play each of the following styles with a metronome audible in the background. (There are videos further down)
- Jazz Swing - Metronome set to 120bpm
- Bossa Nova - Metronome set to 80bpm
- 8th Note Rock - Metronome set to 100bpm
- 1st line of Blues Scales
- Concerns?
- What if I make a mistake?
- Keep going. Just cuz you can't hit a high F doesn't mean you won't make it.
- If you make a mistake, I listen to see if that 1 mess-up ruins the whole thing or if you go on as if it didn't happen. (the second option is better ;) )
- Students who work hard, have a good attitude, and practice often make it over students who are "talented" and don't put in the work.

- Motivated students who will prepare music on their own

- I will be allowing all instruments this year
- You are welcome to start a new instrument if you want. Please talk to me before you make that decision.
- If you plan to change, audition on your first instrument not the one you are about to learn.

Part Assignments
The Jazz Ensemble is an advanced band comprised of 7th and 8th graders who are interested in learning about and performing jazz literature. The Jazz Ensemble meets during 5th Period Enrichment. Students will learn advanced scales, improvisation techniques, and jazz literature. Students must audition to earn a spot in the Jazz Ensemble and spots are limited. Students are required to play at a high standard and students who do not meet the standard will be removed from the ensemble. The Jazz Band performs at all Band Concerts, outreach events in the community, and is expected to perform at music festivals throughout the year.
